Unit 1: European Civilization: This unit will focus on Ancient Greece through the French Revolution. We will look at evolving power relationships in European History. Our focus will be on political systems and political philosophy. We will also look at the rise of the free market system out of the feudal order, the evolving relation of religion and the state, and the evolution of law in the West.
Unit 2: Intro to Islamic Civilization: This unit will look briefly at pre-Islamic Arabia but focus on the rise of Islam and its expansion outside of the Arabian Peninsula after the death of Mohammed. A central focus of the unit will be on Shari'a law and its impact on both past and present.
Unit 3: Modern Middle East: This unit is a case study on American Foreign Policy in the Middle East today.
Unit 4:Indian Sub-continent: This unit will provide a look at the structures of societies on the sub-continent from pre-Vedic society to the British Raj before switching the focus to Indian independence from Great Britain, and the partition of Pakistan.
Unit 5: China: From the Opium Wars to Tiannamen Square. The rise and fall of Mao. This unit will also look at dynastic China in order to provide a context for understanding the changes brought by the Communist Revolution to present-day China.
