A Meeting of the Great Peacemakers

Eugene International High School

Sophomore Projects
2009-2010
First Semester

PROJECTS TEACHERS: Marilyn Curtis, Amy Duncan, Josh Hamill, Rebecca Hammons, Kendall Lawless, Wade Powell, Jesse Scott, Craig Wiebe, Jenelle Youngblood

DESCRIPTION: During this first semester independent study project, you will have the opportunity to explore a famous person of the past or present - a "Great Peacemaker" - of your choice. He or she may be a philosopher or an author, a poet, artist, or political leader, or perhaps a mathematician or scientist. The choice is yours. Choose someone you are interested in knowing a lot about, someone whose contributions fascinate you, someone with whom you wish you could have a conversation, someone whose ideas you would like to share with others.

Together, we will journey through defined steps of thorough research and reading to help you become an expert about this "Great Peacemaker." Along the way, you will learn more about good writing and how to give proper credit to your information sources. Then, to share what you have learned, you will:

  • Write a well-documented research paper about your subject and his/her contribution to the world;
  • Attend a Meeting of Great Peacemakers where you will become your subject, accurately representing her/his personality and perspectives in a rousing roundtable discussion of the grand questions of our time!
