Making Sense – and Use – of New Internet Technologies
Baffled by today's internet soup of tags, blogs, RSS feeds, wikis, podcasts, and more? Gain a practical understanding of these emerging technologies and how they fit into education.
We'll explore quality educational examples and discuss potential problems and abuses. We'll brainstorm and evaluate ways these tools can enhance learning and productivity for teachers and students.
We'll then go live to create a blog, add photos, tag some sites, subscribe to news feeds, and make a mini podcast. And we'll collaborate to make our new blog an extensive how-to resource, service listing and ongoing discussion forum to use following the workshop.
Learning Objectives:
- Give a definition, example and educational purpose for each: blog, tag, tag cloud, RSS, feed reader, podcast, aggregator.
- Understand risks and misuses of these tools in the classroom and beyond
- Discuss how these tools might meet the needs of diverse learners as well as the limitations of these tools for some types of learners or educational settings
- Participate in creating and using a blog, tagged bookmarks, wiki, podcast, and photo sharing
- Participate in subscribing to a news feed and podcast
