Galileo Galilei lived in several small towns of Italy. His thoughts and experiments led to some general understandings about the way things move. Isaac Newton improved and organized those ideas into three “laws”. Albert Einstein added to Newton’s wisdom!

Day 1 (Fri Oct 16)

  1. -Went over HW p. 57, #26-31

  2. -Performed “dangerous demos” involving Newton’s 1st Law (Inertia).

  3. -HW: text pg. 57 #32-37.

Day 2 (Mon Oct 19)

  1. -Discussed Wondering Physics Presentation project.

  2. -Discussed Newton’s 1st Law.

  3. -Answered Ch. 4 Conceptual Questions.

  4. -Went over HW.

Day 3 (Tues Oct 20)

  1. -First, we came up with a shorthand for some common forces: Fs (support force), Fg (force of gravity), Ft (force of tension), Fa (applied force), Ff (force of friction), Fa (applied force, like a push by a hand)

  2. -Next, we drew force forces that apply on objects at rest (static), including:

  3. -    1) A book on a table, 2) a hanging 100g mass, 3) a 3 kg pyramid on a 4 kg box, and 14 kg lawnmower being pushed at an angle of 35° from  horizontal.

  4. -HW: Solve Statics: From Easy to Devilish problems by drawing a force diagrams for each object.

Day 4 (Weds Oct 21)

  1. -Reviewed HW.

  2. -Looked at statics examples in PSE, pg 39, #9-10.

  3. -End of period: set up a rope to for a demo called “Emi Tows The Car”

  4. -HW: pg 41 #12-14.

Day 5 (Thurs Oct 22)

  1. -Went over HW

  2. -Group tutorial: solved statics problems and drew answers on the board.

Day 6 (Fri Oct  23)

  1. -Students did practice quiz, then the rope mini-lab. Click here to download!

Day 7 (Mon Oct 26) - Sub Day

- Worked on Wondering Physics Presentations

Day 8 (Tues Oct 27)

  1. -Introduced friction and its causes

  2. -Introduced static, kinetic and rolling friction, the coefficient of friction “mu” and the “Normal (meaning: perpendicular) Force”

  3. -Watched ESPN Sports Figures video “That ‘mu’ you do”

  4. -Worked friction examples from PSE pg 35 #6-7

  5. -HW: Friction problems, PSE pg 37, #7-9.

Day 9 (Weds Oct 28)

  1. -Warm-up: one backpack-related, one friction problem, one statics problem.

  2. -Checked, Went over HW

  3. -Handed back Backpack Mini-lab.

  4. -Worked more friction examples

  5. -Had students find the coefficient of friction of a variety of pairs of materials

  6. -HW: PSE pg 38, #10-11 and pg. 47 #A-9,  10, 11, 15.

  7. -Reminder: Quiz on Statics & Friction this Friday.

Day 10 (Thurs Oct 29)

  1. -Went over HW

  2. -Pre-lab: Friction Lab

  3. -Friction Lab.

Day 11 (Fri Oct 30)

  1. -Quiz: Static Forces.

  2. -Finish Friction Lab

Day 12 (Mon Nov 2) - (Sub day)

  1. -Wondering Physics Presentation work

  2. -extra time: worked on friction lab

Day 13 (Tues Nov 3)

  1. -Wondering Physics Presentations (2)

  2. -More time to work on friction lab

Day 14 (Weds Nov 4)

  1. -Reviewed statics, forces

  2. -HW PSE pg 47 # A-6, 7, 9 15.

Day 15 (Thurs Nov 5)

  1. -Wondering Physics Presentations (2)

  2. -Went over HW

Day 16 (Fri Nov 6)

  1. -Answered Ch. 5 Conceptual Questions.

  2. -Worked through Ch. 6
