Westwind is located on the Oregon coast, just a few miles north of Lincoln City.  In use by Northwest Outdoor Science School since 1984, Westwind is one of the most beautiful places in Oregon.  Its 508 acres of wild coastal land include 2 miles of coastline, rocky headlands and sea caves, mature Sitka spruce and beach pine forests, and the Salmon River estuary. Westwind and Cascade Head (seen above) are part of a U.N. Biosphere Reserve.

Westwind is an outstanding place to study natural science.  Its seclusion -- access is only by boat across the Salmon River, or a three mile hike along an access road -- and inclusion within the Cascade Head Scenic-Research Area have kept it a very wild place.  Wildlife at Westwind include Bald Eagles, elk, ravens, deer, sea lions, salmon, bobcats and whales.  Also, there are numerous tide pools and sea caves filled with wondrous marine organisms.

Facilities at Westwind include a lodge with dining hall, modern shower-house & restrooms, fifteen cabins, learning center, staff & teacher lodging, and a health center.

Northwest Outdoor Science School Program at Westwind contributes to the development of environmental literacy and responsible citizenship, provides hands-on learning experiences that are integrated with local school curricula, and promotes learning about, and appreciation for, the natural world. Curriculum is based on the standards set by Oregon's Education Act for the 21st Century. It is aligned with benchmarks for 5th and 8th grades in science, math, English, social science, health education, physical education, and the arts.

Students are exposed to careers in science and natural resource management and they participate in real scientific research through data collection and analysis. For more information, please visit the Northwest Outdoor Science School website.

The total cost for each student is $240 for three days and two nights. This cost includes meals and bus transportation. Recognizing that not all families can afford this amount, we apply for grants, conduct fundraisers with the help of dedicated parents, and utilize PTA and school resources. The success of those efforts greatly affects the final cost of Outdoor School. This year we are asking families to pay $50 each. Every fifth grade student will attend Outdoor School, regardless of a family’s ability to pay.
