Lesson One: Organisms and Their Environments Activity Four: Ecosystem in a Bottle |
|||||||||
Activity Four: In this activity you will create a miniature ecosystem in one or more 2 liter plastic soda bottles, a biobottle. The idea is to create a self-sustaining ecosystem that can be easily observed over time. Each organism you choose to put in the biobottle must have a source of energy (food supply). Be sure to use small organisms (no mammals, reptiles, or birds) insects, spiders, small fish, water bugs,and simple plants or seeds work best. Please don't go out and spend money on this project, collect soil, water, plants, and organisms from outside around your neighborhood. Below are some diagrams and directions for several different types of biobottles. I have also listed some supplies that I will provide if you need them, come into C-8 anytime to use them. 1.In the form below describe what your biobottle looks like. Include the materials used (both abiotic and biotic) and a prediction about what you expect to happen in the bottle over the next 2 weeks. 2. Keep a weekly log of observations regarding the biobottle. Be prepared to submit this towards the end of the semester. Include notes on what you originally started with and what happens to the organisms as time goes by.
