Soils 

Goals and Objectives

1. Students will become familiar with soil forming processes and learn to analyze and identify soils in the Willamette Valley. Students will:

  • Study the geologic history of soils in the Willamette Valley.
  • Distinguish between the major local soil types.

2. The students will learn to analyze soil samples in the field and learn to use local soil survey publications to support their conclusions. Students will:

  • Participate in exploratory labs.

3. The students will identify different threats to soil health in our area. Special emphasis will be placed on agricultural practices in the valley. Students will:

  • Research the Dust Bowl and the lessons learned from that historic period.
  • Research the history of soil use and disturbances in the Willamette Valley.
  • Visit an organic Farm and learn about sustainable agricultural practices.
