Map Types
The major categories of maps are general reference, navigational, thematic, and inventory. However, there are many subcategories of maps. These include historic maps that record battles, disease outbreaks, or settlement; population maps, including population growth, density, age, origin, or ethnicity, political maps; maps that specify economic factors, such as employment, manufacturing, and various markets; maps that show land ownership; industrial maps of minerals, timber, fish, land use, and energy sources and use; transportation maps showing highways, railroads, airways, shipping channels, bike paths, and trails; inventory maps with lakes, floods, glaciers, volcanoes, earthquakes, landslides, rivers, and soil; weather maps that record precipitation, temperature, and climate; and environmental maps that show ecoregions, vegetation, wildlife habitat. Maps describe subjects in relation to a location.

Map 2: Map type: Thematic Main use: shows the spread of AIDS throughout Africa Location found: National Geographic Special features: In addition to showing the number of people with AIDS, the map shows the number of AIDS orphans in select African countries and which countries have more than 20%of the population infected with AIDS. Infection levels are indicated by color. Map scale: None given (2 centimeters equal 600 miles) |
