Lesson 2 Activity 2a


Activity 2a Part 1: Choose a section of a sidewalk that is exactly 20 feet long. Create a detailed colored map on plain white 8.5" X 11" paper of the sidewalk section that includes the following:

  • A scale (example one inch = two feet)
  • Exact location of all major sidewalk features (cracks, weeds, holes, etc.)
  • Location and description of any unusual features (dog poop etc.)
  • Show curves, drops and gains in elevation, and slopes.
  • Indicate which direction north is.

Activity 2a Part 2: Choose an outdoor area the size of a typical backyard. Create a detailed colored map of the area on 11"X 17" white paper. (Paper for this assignment is available in Room C-8.) Include the following:

  • A scale
  • Location of all major trees, shrubs, and plants (including lawns)
  • Draw on the map all landform features (examples: higher and lower areas, water bodies, ditches, garden areas, etc.)
  • Include all fences, borders, patios, and any other physical features
  • Choose 10 features, assign a number to them on the map, write a brief description of each numbered feature on the back of the map.
