At the end of this lesson you should be able to answer the following questions:

  • Who was Rachel Carson?
  • What did she do that was important?
  • What is the signifigance of Rachel Carson's book Silent Spring?

Your answers to the questions in the activities below will be assessed on the basis of clarity, accuracy, and completeness of the responses.

Activity 1: In order to find out who Rachel Carson was you will need to do some research. Use the following link, the excerpt from The Silent Spring you are reading this week, and at least one other resource that you find.

The assignment is to complete the following:

1. Tell us who Rachel Carson was and what she did that was important (at least 200 words).

 

2.Why do you think Rachel Carson entitled her book Silent Spring? What do you think Carson meant by this title?

 

3.What criticisms can be made of Carson's ideas? Which seem valid to you? Why?

 

4.How can one person who believes in what s/he is doing make a difference?

 

5.Why are people so resistant to change? Think of this in the context of an environmental issue when answering.

 

6.Write an argument in support of or in disagreement with each of the following statements (one paragraph per statement; two paragraphs total).

 

  • Any chemical that harms wildlife or their food sources should be banned regardless of the benefits it provides.

 

  • Any harm created by a new technology can ultimately be undone by another technology.
