Goals and Objectives


1. Students will become familiar with Rachel Carson Center procedures and methods of communication. Students will:

A. Understand the procedures of the Rachel Carson program including:

  • Weekly schedule of field studies and seminar class sessions.
  • Understand the types of assignments, methods and locations for submitting assignments.

B. Review and/or learn methods for communicating with each other and the Rachel Carson teachers including:

  • Familiarity with the use of the 4J email system.
  • Basic computer skills (open and use a word processor, spell checking, name and save a document to a disk, cut, copy, paste, etc.).

2. The students will investigate the life and work of Rachel Carson. Students will:

  • Understand who Rachel Carson was and what she did that was significant.
  • Understand what pesticides are and the environmental consequences of their use.
  • Investigate the use of pesticides in their home.

3. The students will become familiar with a variety of map types and their uses. Students will:

  • Use and interpret a variety of different map types.
  • Understand how maps are created.
  • Create their own maps.
  • Learn how to understand and use topographic maps.
