Due:   Fri 10/27

Get outside and have fun with this week's homework assignment! Your task is to take one of the suggested walks or bike tours below and to create a thematic map of the area you walked or rode in.

Background

A thematic map is one that identifies distribution patterns (or a specific theme) over a given area. For example, it might show the number and type of wildlife observed on a walk or ride and where each was observed.

Process

1.First, choose a walk or ride in the Eugene area to take. Suggestions include:

Spencer's Butte, the Fern Ridge bike path, West Eugene wetlands trails

Mount Pisgah, Skinner's Butte, the River Path Amazon trail.

Limited time options: CHS campus walk or ride, your home to school route or home to work route

2.Choose the theme or distribution pattern for your area. Decide what you will look for on your walk/ride and map. Here are some examples to consider: trees (choose a specific type to map), trash, houses, birds, telephone poles/cell towers, land use patterns, bridges, fire hydrants, wildlife, flowers, fast food restaurants, restrooms, etc. Be creative; have fun!

3.Create a map.  Your map must include

  • A title indicating what theme you chose; ex: Fire Hydrants ihn My Neighborhood
  • The area you traveled (make it to scale and indicate scale)
  • The 4 compass directions
  • A legend
  • A mapped distribution pattern or theme (i.e. what you saw and where you saw it along your route)
