over the following questions and answer them for this week’s homework
assignment.
1. Who was Rachel Carson and what did she do that was important?
2. What difficulties did Carson face in writing and publishing Silent
Spring?
3. Summarize the main arguments for and against the use of pesticides.
4. Define the following ‘map’ terms; latitude, longitude,
geographic and magnet north poles, compass directions, map scale, projection,
legend, equator and prime meridian.
5. How are topographic maps different from other map types?
6. What is GPS and how is it useful?
7. Identify and describe how two native plants were used by the Kalapuyans.
8.How did the Kalapuyans live? Include information on their societal structure,
food, language and oral tradition, religion and shelter.
9. How and why was fire used by the Kalapuyans?
10. How are today’s land management techniques used by The Nature
Conservancy in the west Eugene wetlands related to what the Kalapuyans
did?
Note: The test will also cover details regarding topographic maps including;
determining elevations and changes in elevation, measuring distance traveled
using the map scale, interpretation of contour line patterns to describe
landscapes.
