Using the Soil Survey

To complete this assignment it will be necessary to come into the clasroom and use a copy of the Soil Survey of Lane County. Please do not remove these books from the classroom. Answer the following questions as you examine the soil survey. Open the book to the inside cover and read the 'How to Use This Soil Survey'.

 

1. Read the 'Foreword' on page xi of the book. Describe in general the purpose of the publication and a specific use that high school students might use this document for.

 

 

 

 

 

2. Go to the 'General Soil Map'. The map is the first fold out colored map page about half way through the book (no page number). Examine this map and choose one of the soil types in the county. Detailed descriptions of each soil type start on page 7. Answer the following for that soil type;

 

a. Soil type name __________________________

 

b. Brief description of the soil type:

 

 

c. Where is this soil type commonly located?

 

 

d. Common vegetation?

 

 

e. Uses of this soil type?

 

 

3. Immediately following the General Soil Map is the 'Index to Map Sheets'. Find the map sheet that has your home on it. Pages 21 - 154 contains detailed explanations of each soil type on the maps. Examine the soil map of your neighborhood and answer the following;

 

a. Soil name closest to your home ______________________________

 

b. Brief description of your neighborhood soil type.

 

 

 

 

c. How does this description differ from the one you wrote in question 2 (b) above? (more detailed? less detailed? etc.)

 

 

 

 

 

 

4. Using the information provided on pages 3-4, describe how a soil survey is made.
