HW #11: Water Test Review Sheet
Due Friday Feb. 27, 2009
Red Period 2: Water Test Friday, Feb. 27
Blue Period 3: Water Test Wednesday, March 4
Answer the following review questions in preparation for the unit test
on water.
1. What are the physical and chemical properties of water? Describe the
various properties of water we discussed in class, including capillary
action, polarity, surface cohesion, relative density, and specific heat
index.
2. Describe the structure of a water molecule and tell how its structure
influences its ability to dissolve other substances.
3. What is the process that wastewater goes through before it is re-released
into the Willamette River? Describe the major steps and support theses
with some details.
4. Describe the process that water goes through once it's pulled from
the McKenzie River at EWEB's Water Filtration Plant. What chemicals are
added, what processes are used to filter it?
5. What is a watershed? How do human impacts affect watersheds (name and
describe three)?
6. Draw and explain the steps of the hydrologic cycle. Use the words precipitation,
condensation, evaporation, runoff, ground water and transpiration in your
answer.
7. What is a riparian area and why are they especially important to wildlife?
Describe two ways that humans impact these areas and what can be done
to reduce the impacts.
8. Experts estimate that only approximately .3% of the water on Earth
is available for human use. Explain why this is so by describing the earth’s
water supply in terms of percentages. Be sure to use and explain the terms
fresh water (and its sources), salt water and polar caps in your explanation.
9. Water is a nonrenewable resource. Explain.
10. Define the following terms; ground water, water table.
11. Ground and well water is particularly susceptible to pollution. Explain
why and give at least two examples of how it can be polluted.
12. Describe the background of the water crisis in the Klamath Basin.
Who is involved, what are the problems, how can the situation be resolved?
(Be sure you understand how farmers, Native Americans, environmentalists,
town citizens are affected by the water shortage. Be sure you can explain
the factors causing the water shortage).
13. What is the Clean Water Act and how has it affected water pollution?
14. What’s the difference between point source and non-point source
pollution? Give examples of each.
15. Name and describe the effects of three of the following sources of
water pollution we studied in class: toxic chemicals, biodegradable wastes,
plant nutrients, heat, sediments and radioactive waste.
