Rachel Carson 1 HW Assignment #12 Water Use Due: Fri 1/16/09
Name____________________________________ Period_______
Purpose: Find out how much water you and your family use at home on a typical day.
Questions: Please answer the following in complete sentences.
1. Name all the ways your family uses water. Include as many different ways as possible, for example: dishwashing, cooking, etc.
2. Estimate the total daily water use in your home in gallons (just make your best guess here; you'll calculate it more accurately later in this assignment).
3. Where does the water in your house come from and where does the wastewater go once it leaves your house?
4. Should our use of water as Oregonians be the same as the water use of those in states such as Nevada or Arizona? Why or why not?
5. Calculate your personal daily water use. To do this, estimate how often you use water on a given day. Interview other family members to get an approximation for # of times you run the dishwasher and washing machine per day. To make things consistent, take a rainy and cold Saturday when you and your family happen to stay home all day. How often and long do you do the following:
# of showers/baths and length _______ ______(length) # of toilet flushings _______ # of hand/face washings _______ # of dishwasher loads _______ # of washing machine loads _______ # of teethbrushings _______ # of glasses of water drunk _______
Ø Next, go to the following website to calculate your average daily water usage. http://ga.water.usgs.gov/edu/sq3.html Ø Plug in the information and hit submit to see your average water use. The site will calculate this for you and your use will come up on the screen after you hit "submit".
6. Record your water usage from the website. Record your personal use (total divided by number of family members). Is this more or less than you originally estimated back in question #2? What are some explanations?
7. Has your family ever considered conserving water? What have you done (or could you do) to conseve it? List three examples. |
