Adopt-A-Tree Assignment

Locate a tree near school or home that you wish to observe during the week. Plan to visit the tree at least 3 times during the week, preferably during different times of the day. Examine it closely each time and complete the following activity using your own paper. Submit the written assignment to your folderor email your work to whitley@4j.lane.edu.

 

1. Describe your tree in detail. (look at its physical characteristics: size, leaf shape, bark color, etc.)

2. Describe how you think your tree got where it is and how new trees might join it.

3. What does your tree require for its own survival?

4. Describe what other living things might need your tree for survival.

5. Are there signs that wildlife use your tree? What are they?

6. How does your tree change through the seasons?

7. Make a detailed drawing of your tree and label the main characteristics (trunk, branches, crown, etc.).

8. Estimate your tree's height and diameter.

9. Investigate your tree's history; look for signs of scars, or damage that might give clues about its past. In a paragraph write a hypothetical life story.

10. Identify your tree by both common and scientific names.
