Math

How to Help Your Child:

Give your child a group of things (toothpicks, silverware, rocks, etc.) and challenge them to count it efficiently and accurately.  If it is a large group, we want them grouping and skip counting by 2, 5, or 10.

Also, help your child practice skip counting as often as you can.  On the way to school, in the car, at home, waiting in line at the grocery store, wherever!  Be silly!  Sing it, clap it, stomp it, whatever it takes to get the practice!

By the end of the year want students to count to 1,000 starting with any number and counting by 1, 2, 5, 10, or 100.

Draw dot images and show them to your child for less than 3 seconds.  Have your child draw what they saw and talk about how they knew many were there.

Play guess my number.  Choose a number and have your child try to guess it.  Give real math vocabulary when describing the number.  For example, “I am thinking of a number that is greater than 10, but less than 50.”  You can also give clues like, “It has a 3 in the tens place.”

Point out the clock when it is an hour time.  Have your students tell you the time.
