EXTENSION ACTIVITIES

Hey Room 2 Kids! When you are finished with all of your work, I would like for you to complete one of the following activities and present it to the class about our Plant Growth and Development Science Unit.

Make sure that the information you take off the internet is valid and reliable information.  Look to see if the information you are taking is off a professional website, rather than one created by another student.  You can check to see if information is valid by looking at another website and checking the information.

Remember, this is an extension activity and it is encouraged to be done with thought and creativity.  You are gathering information to teach the class about Plant Growth and Development.  Have Fun!

Possible Science Extension Activities

1. Research about the life cycle of Wisconsin Fast Plants.  Create a life cycle poster with real pictures of the different stages of the plants.  You could even use the digital cameras or proscopes to take your own pictures and import them into your iPhoto library.  Create a separate file for your pictures.

2. Research about the pollination process of the Wisconsin Fast Plants.  What other factors help or hurt this process?

3. Find information about honey bees and why they are called “killer bees.”  Research information about their anatomy, pollination, interdependence of bees and flowering plants.

4. Answer the question of, “Why do bees dance?”  Find information about the dancing habits of bees and perform and teach to the class the reasons for examples of their dances.

5. Think of examples of leaves, buds and seeds that we eat.  For example, we eat many edible leaves such as lettuce, collard green, spinach and cabbage.  Students might not know that artichokes, broccoli, brussels sprouts, and cauliflower are edible buds and flowers.  Find more edible examples.  (You might want to search for pictures of edible leaves, buds and seeds and start from there.)

Presentation of Information

* Create a Keynote presentation with at least 5 slides.  Include pictures and don’t forget transitions.

* Take digital pictures, or use a proscope, and import them into your iPhoto library.  Make a new folder for these pictures.  (We can print them out in color for better quality.)  Make a poster or collage of your information.

* Use comic life and create a comic strip including your information.

* Create a Pages page to be linked to our classroom web page with your information.

* Create a video of your information, acting as though you are a “television host or presenter”.  Your video will be linked to our classroom website.
