Technical Writing

In Technical Writing you will practice a variety of writing skills to improve communication in employment and college. Employees are routinely asked to write as part of their jobs and students must be skilled writers to succeed in college.  Technical writing skills can also benefit you in your personal life. Being able to write clearly in order to improve communication and understanding will help you as a community member, family member and student.

This course is divided into several focus areas. Some assignments allow students to practice writing required in the workplace. Others include audience recognition, observation, clarity, conciseness, and attractive and appropriate formatting. It is also important that technical writers meet deadlines, therefore submitting assignments in a timely fashion will be part of the evaluation process used in this course.

Assignments seek to expand on skills developed in earlier lessons.

Throughout this course you will be communicating with your instructor and other students via e-mail. You may also be asked to evaluate your own and others' work.

One important aspect of writing is self-evaluation and self-reflection. You will achieve this through editing and revising your work and creating a personal portfolio of your best technical writing.  When looking for a job technical writers need a portfolio of their best writing samples to show employers.
