12.  Plastic Bag Ban in Eugene

Watch the movie The Plastic Bag.  Afterwards, find out about Eugene’s plastic bag ban and respond to the following questions. 

  1. 1. Evaluate the movie The Plastic Bag.  What point was it trying to make? Did you find it effective? Explain.

  2. 2.Eugene has a plastic bag ban.  Go to the FAQ page on the website linked above to read information.  What are the basic reasons for adopting this policy (explain at least THREE) and when did it become effective?

  3. 3.What are the basic rules of the policy?

  4. 4.The new plastic bag ban is a local law.  Name THREE other cities that have a bag ban.  For one you listed, find out if its basic rules are the same as Eugene’s.  Explain your research.

  5. 5.Why might retailers oppose the bag ban? What’s the best argument?

  6. 6.Some say the ban is unfairly hard on the poor.  Do you agree with this? Why/not?

  7. 7.In balance, should cities ban plastic bags like Eugene has? Explain your reasoning.
