Assignment #8 Oceans

Lesson 8- Oceans

OBJECTIVES

  1. Research the ecological value of oceans and their impact on the world's environmental health.

  2. Explore the problems that compromise the oceans' health such as pollution, overfishing, habitat destruction, introduced species and climate change.

  3. Propose and evaluate solutions to environmental problems facing oceans today.

The Issue

Arthur C. Clarke, a scientist and writer, said that it is "inappropriate to call this planet Earth, when clearly it is ocean." Covering over 71% of the surface of the Earth and occupying over 90% of its space, oceans dominate our planet and have great influence on the Earth's overall environmental health. Yet humans have done much to compromise the physical, biological and chemical health of the world's oceans.
