Assignment (40 points)
Your task this week is to write a 1-2 page reflection essay that analyzes the Endangered Species Act (ESA) with a focus on how the Act has affected wolf reintroduction. You will evaluate the effects and effectiveness of the ESA as well. You may use the guiding questions provided to organize your paper. You will use the websites provided to research your information.
Skills: You will need to read, research, evaluate and compose an essay about the ESA and evaluate its effectiveness and problems by considering the case study of wolf re-introduction.
Format: Papers must be word-processed using a 12-point font and double-spaced. Please turn in a hard copy to your folder rather than using the textbox on this page.
Assigned Reading / Websites
1. Begin by reading background information about the Endangered Species Act.
2. In what ways has the ESA been successful? Why do environmentalists hail its efforts?
5. Wolves and the Endangered Species Act
Guiding Questions:
•What is the ESA, what does it do and how does it work?
•What are the greatest challenges/problems and successes of the ESA so far?
•Why are wolves important ecologically and culturally? What is the history of wolves in the West?
•Why are ranchers wary of wolf reintroduction? Evaluate the problems with reintroduction.
•Do you think wolves should be reintroduced in Oregon? Support your answer with evidence.
•Do you think the wolf should be de-listed? Defend your answer.
•Has the ESA been successful overall? Support your answer.

Tips

Evaluation
Your essay will be evaluated on the following criteria:
•Complete answers to the guiding questions (60%)
•Well-organized (intro-body-conclusion) (20%)
•Absence of any punctuation, grammar, or spelling errors; double-spaced(10%)
•Works Cited page (10%)
