Monthly Reading Calendars
Each month the children will complete a special monthly calendar. The front of the calendar will be filled in at school with information about special events and happenings for the coming month. On the back you will find what we call our Monthly Reading Calendar. Each time your child reads for 30 minutes at home during the month, they should color in one if the objects (for example apples in September). When the apples are all filled in, mom or dad should sign at the bottom of the page and then return the calendar to me. Everyone who returns their calendar by the end of the month will be able to participate in our “Readers’ Lunch”, a special lunch party with me in our classroom.
Math Fact Family Flashcards
As part of their homework our third graders will be reviewing their Addition and Subtraction facts throughout the first part of the school year. Each Friday children will be quizzed on a total of 100 facts. This will be a timed quiz (5 minutes). Please support your student to master their math facts by using the Fact Family Flashcards that we’ll be sending home toward the end of September.
Weekly Homework Packets
Each week the children will be given a homework packet to complete during the week. Packets will be sent home on the first school day of the week and are due back by Friday. The packet will contain these items:
A Weekly Planning Sheet
A Reading At Home (RAH) Record Sheet
A Weekly Spelling List*
A Math Practice Sheet*
Cursive Writing Practice
* There will be Spelling and Math Fact Quizzes at the end of the week.
Seasonal Thematic Projects
From time to time throughout the year the students will be assigned additional homework projects as an extension to the weekly homework packets. We will announce project themes and projected finish dates in our classroom newsletters, so keep an eye out for forthcoming details.
These projects will typically be longer term, open-ended assignments that your child can work on for weeks at a time. Often, the children will have the flexibility to decide if they want to create a poster, work on an art project, make a computer slide show, write a poem, or build a diorama. Upon completion, the children will be asked to make a presentation to the class based on their project. We will be working on our public speaking skills throughout the year and these presentations will serve as excellent practice for giving speeches.
