Lesson: Serve
Place a polyspot 10-15 feet
away from a hoop. In the hoop place a beanbag and Gertie ball, and have
enough set-ups for every two students.
- First, discuss and practice
the correct form for making an underhand toss.
- Send each group of two to
a polyspot to use the beanbags to make underhand tosses into the hoop.
Progress to using that same form to underhand serve the ball. Have students
stand on opposite sides of the hoop.
- READY: Face target, feet shoulder width apart, eyes look forward, ball held in nondominant hand, ball held at waist level in front of body.
- START: Face the direction of the strike, feet shoulder width apart, eyes look forward
- HOLD IT LOW AND EXTEND: ball is held in nondominant hand, arm is extended forward and in front of body at waist level.
- ARM BACK: pull striking hand back
- STEP FOWARD: with opposite foot of striking hand
- HIT: Strike ball on the underside while the other hand drops away.
- STEP AND SWING - STEP AND HIT: Step forward with nondominant foot, while striking ball with heel of hand, then;;
FOLLOW THROUGH: hand continues in the direction of ball up to the shoulder level.
- Serve so that your partner
can catch the ball.
- The partner then repeats
the procedure.
- How many serves and catches
can you and your partner make in two minutes.
- Balloon/Volleyball Shuttle Relay:
- Four teams are lined up in shuttle relay style (one - half of team at opposite ends of the gym, facing each other).
- Keep your team's balloon in the air, by tapping it in the air while moving straight ahead to pass it to the first teammate in line at the opposite end of the gym
- Continue for a minimum of two minutes, or longer when interest and focus remains high.
- Variation: When the balloon is gets to the line each member of the team has to set the ball/balloon in the air until all team members who are in the line touch the ball/balloon.
- Group Juggle - Serve Practice
- Break class into four teams, with each team spread out around a four square, by standing at corners and/or at the cross lines.
- Group Juggle by throwing a volleyball training ball (or other low impact volleyball) to someone across and not next to you. Continue this until everyone has passed and caught the ball and it is returned to the player that started the group juggle.
- Practice this while throwing and catching until the order is remembered. Note: Sometimes due to numbers you have to pass to the person next to you.
- NEXT - Underhand Serve in the same order. The receiver of the ball should catch the serve. Then, continue the pattern of serving and catching, until the ball returns to the start.
- Continue and add a second ball when serves and catches are becoming consistent.
