Compare/Contrast Poem on Higher Education and Careers

Assignment Description

We all have competing voices in our heads telling us to take different courses of action. One set of voices might be telling us to follow the rules, do our best and work really hard. Another set of voices might be telling us to take it easy, to worry about the future when it comes, and to have fun while we are still young. Hopefully, the set of voices telling you to work hard and achieve are the ones that are wining out! What I want you to do with this assignment is explore some of the mixed feelings you might have about the future and your current achievement by writing a compare and contrast poem. The following guidelines are the minimum , you may make your poem longer.

Lines one and two should talk about your current academic achievement. One line should be written from an ambitious, hard working point of view and the other line should be written from a slacker point of view.

Example:
Ambitious Line
Looking for me? In class I will always be, learning about ancient cities and life on mars. Come wonder with me!

Slacker Line
Ya looking for me? Look in the library, check the math lab, run around the whole darn place. Get all the exercise you need. But if you really want to find me, at Safeway I will always be.

(My excellent rhyme scheme does not have to emulated!)

Lines three and four should talk about your current extra curricular participation (for example, drama, sports, band, etc.). Again, one line should be written from an ambitious, hard working point of view and the other should be written from a slacker point of view.

Lines five and six should talk about jobs you want to hold during school. Again, one should be ambitious, the other slacker.

Lines seven and eight should deal with preparing for future education (researching schools, filling out applications, taking the necessary tests, etc). Again, one should be ambitious, the other slacker.

Lines nine and ten should talk about what you want to achieve during your time in college or technical school. Again, one should be ambitious, the other slacker.

Lines eleven and twelve should be your conclusion. Which voices do you want to listen to? What do you need to do in order to be successful?
