Procedures for Managing Student Work

1. Procedures for Assigning Classwork & Homework:
All assignments will be written on the weekly assn. sheet which will also be posted on our class webpage. Both will be amended as needed. A Study Buddy will put all distributed materials in their buddy’s Friday File Folder when they’re absent. When the buddy returns, the both check in with each other regarding the missing assns. Long term assn status will be posted on the weekly assn. sheet as well.

2. Procedures for Managing Independent Work Periods
A. Anytime a student shows a pattern of not completing work, I will meet w/ the student privately to determine if the work is beyond their ability. If so, I’ll modify or adapt the assn. as needed to help them be successful.
B. I will keep work periods to no longer than 30 mins followed by some “Change Up” activity.
C. During the first few weeks, I will directly teach students how to behave during independent work periods.
D. I will provide guided practice (gradual release of responsibility method) before expecting students to complete any new type of task independently.
E. When students have questions during work times, they will use the procedure, “3 Before Me” & then raise their hand. I may use a paper trianglular prism on their desk (“I need help please” on 1 side & “Keep working” on the other side.) later.

3. Procedures for Collecting Student Work:
I will collect the weekly Schoolwork Packet from each student Friday morning as they work on their daily opener. They will put their work on the top left corner of their desk. Sometimes, they will be instructed to turn their work into one of the subject baskets. This will be noted on our “Exit Directions” chart. Students may turn in their work early; they should turn it in to the proper homework tray by the classroom door.

4. Procedures for Keeping Records & Providing Feedback to Students & Families:
I will enter grades into my online gradebook which is posted on the web & notify parents via email that the gradebook has been updated. I’ll teach parents how to access it & how to make good use of it. Occassionally I will print out a weekly missing assns. report for students. It will be on their desk on a Monday. I hope to keep a class chart of Percentage of Homework Turned In On Time as a way to provide feedback & to motivate students to get their homework in on time. Students whose parents do not have email will receive a hard copy of the gradebook summary .

5. Procedures for Dealing with Late / Missing Assignments:
Parents will be informed (via the online gradebook or a phone call) of if there is a pattern of missing schoolwork packets.
A parent-teacher conference will be called if 2 packets are missing to find out what’s going on & how to help the child be successful. Students can arrange to stay after school to get caught up.
