Greetings Parents!
- More Tests: 4j Math Assessment on Tuesday & Wednesday, Oregon State
Reading & Math Test on Tuesday & Thursday.
- Heroes Projects: Students have been assigned a
hero; most of them have books. I have put a "Heroes
Project" link on our homepage. It has a list of assigned heroes, a timeline, useful
research links, and inquiry guidelines. A few students may need your
help to get a book on their hero. They will be taking notes (facts & responses)
on their hero as well as preparing a one-minute speech for the Wax
Museum on May 29. They will need to come up with a costume that
generally resembles their hero. They should NOT paint their face
to match their hero's race. Please don't spend more than $10 on their
costume; thrift shops are a good source for costume pieces. We have
a small costume closet here at school that a few students can browse.
The selection is limited, so if possible try to find something on
your own. The
"Heroes All" DVD will be available for $15. Checks
can be made out to "Power Station" if you want one.
- New Math Unit: Up & Down the Number Line. (Coded U&D in
the online gradebook) In this unit students start to learn about positive and
negative numbers (like -1, -2). We'll put combinations of positive
& negative numbers to see what we get. For example: I got on the
elevator at some floor in my building. I moved up two floors, then
down three floors, and I ended up on the fifth floor. What floor
did I start on?
- Science: We pollinated our plants with real dead bees and now they
are growing some interesting pods. We looked at the "sticky stamens"
and pollen-laden anthers in various flowers. Maybe go around your
yard and have your child identify these parts on the flowers in your
yard.
