North Eugene has won more Midwestern League Championships than any other team in the league! As of the end of the 2008 season, we have won 24 titles. That's almost one title every other year of our 51 year existence.

One of the keys to our success has been the good fortune to have great coaches over the years. Mel Krause started our program in 1958. He definitely set the tone for future Highlander coaches. Mel eventually became head coach of the University of Oregon and is a member of the Oregon Sports Hall of Fame, University of Oregon Hall of Fame and Portland Interscholastic League Sports Hall of Fame. Mel passed away in 2008 at the age of 80.

Krause was followed as coach by Ron Walp (1964-67) and Tom Stone (1968- 74). Both coaches continued a coaching record started by Krause that stands today - retiring as head coach with a winning record, at least one district championship and one state quarterfinals appearance.

In 1975, Gary Selby took over the reigns of our program and continued as head coach for 24 years. Selby's Highlanders captured 14 league titles, 7 quarterfinal and 2 semifinal appearances. He retired as head coach with an incredible .730 winning percentage including playoff games.

Current coach Corey Nicholsen is in his 11th year (as of 2009) and is holding up our tradition. Five league titles and three state quarterfinals prove that the Highlanders are continuing their success.

Of course, we couldn't have had this success without gifted and hardworking athletes. Over 100 Highlanders have gone on to play college ball. At least twelve have moved on to professional baseball, with Danny Ainge playing for the Toronto Blue Jays before moving on to his basketball career. And as of the end of the 2008 season, Highlanders have been selected to the state all star team 60 times. Players in bold have been selected in more than one year.

Finally, we have been blessed with a tremendous amount of parent and booster activity. We could not run our high school and summer programs without their unwavering support. Our success is truly a product of the combined efforts of our coaches, players, parents and boosters.
