| In 1984, when I came to the District, 99% of my duties involved
cataloging library materials, both print and non-print, using OCLC resources.
We generated catalog cards for the media specialists to file, and processed
the materials with checkout cards and pockets. During the next eleven years
I helped the District move toward the automated libraries that exist today.
No more cards -- just electronic records for the libraries' computers. Since July 1996, all of the district library books ordered from Baker & Taylor arrive at the schools processed and with catalog records on the Baker & Taylor web site. Barcodes are on the books and in the records, ready to check out as soon as the records are imported. Of course, in-house cataloging is still necessary -- for non-print items, foreign language works, and various titles that need to be cataloged "from scratch." That's my main job. I also act as liaison between the book vendors and school library personnel, make sure that the cataloging data stays compatible with new versions of our automation software, and help with telephone user support. Off the job I ride my bike, walk, and hike. My husband and I enjoy traveling -- mostly in the Pacific Northwest. |
