Welcome to Howard Elementary

During the 2005-06 school year, we were told that we were receiving building funds to create a new attraction program.  Our principal, Kim Finch, had the insight to reach out toward a technology integrated school.  With a vision, funding for both staff development, and the purchase of hardware and software, we were well on our way.  Teachers were each given an Intel MacBook, a digital projector and a digital camera to practice with and become comfortable with well before we were to use them with students.

With a plan in place, and guaranteed funding for the next 3 years, we began to offer much needed training on how to use technology as a tool for learning.  In August, before the 2006-07 school year, we held a week long inservice for all certified staff on software that we had purchased and basic programs on our machines.

We rolled out our computers at the beginning of October, and students were well on their way of producing a piece of work to share at our 1st Annual Technology Night in November.

Throughout the year, many teachers received a SMART Board to use in their classrooms.  We had slowly gotten rid of the old overhead projectors and transparencies and replaced them with our interactive teaching tools.

In January, we began offering informational classes for parents.  Parents had to attend one of the trainings before students could take home their laptops.  Most parents attended a training and were very excited to see what their child was doing with technology at school.

By aligning our lessons with both the Oregon State Standards and the NETS, teachers were able to create lessons that would best meet the needs of students while also allowing them to be more creative and individualized with their learning.

Our goal for our second year in 2007-08 is to become even more seamless in using technology and into integrating it into every subject throughout the day.  We are trying to keep up with the most current tools available online and constantly modifying how we teach in order to reach the needs of our students.

Update   2007-08

This year, we have integrated the use of student response systems, or “clickers” in our daily routines.  Students use their clickers to respond to questions and daily reflections.  All students are engaged and positively interacting in our daily discussions.

Update   2008-09

This year, we have tried to take technology integration to a whole new level.  With students taking home their laptops 3 nights a week, we are able to produce exciting, creative activities and products.  Students are feeling very confident with their skills and able to share their hard work with parents at home.
