  Hockey
  • Hop back and forth over your stick 10 times
  • Zig-zag jump from one end of hockey stick to the other
  • Leap over stick and land on one foot- two feet, etc.
  • Hockey Stick Skills:
  • Place one hand at the top of the stick and the other hand halfway down
  • Now change your hands the opposite way and decide which feels more natural
  • Stretches: Hold stick with both hands, stretch down, to the sides and back.
  • Thread the Needle: Hold stick with both hands in front of you and step one leg over the stick, then the other, then step back to starting position.

    Stance

  • Feet firmly on floor
  • Knees bent
  • Hips slightly back
  • Back straight, head up
  • Stick flat on floor, form a triangle with feet

    Shooting

  • Place one hand at the top of the stick and the other hand halfway down
  • Now change your hands the opposite way and decide which feels more natural
  • Chose your preferred hand position
  • Turn your side to the target (i.e., if right handed turn left side/shoulder to target)
  • Address the puck from the baseball (sideways) stance
  • Aim, strike and finish with stick blade in line with target
  • Stick should go no higher than knee level on back swing and follow through
  • Follow through with blade pointed at the target

    Dribbling

  • Place one hand at the top of the stick and the other hand halfway down
  • Now change your hands the opposite way and decide which feels more natural
  • Chose your preferred hand position
  • Use "soft taps" when striking the puck or ball. This will keep it close to you
  • Bend knees
  • Use both sides of the stick to control the ball/puck

    Ready Position:

  • Place one hand at the top of the stick and the other hand halfway down
  • Bend your knees - Let the edge of the stick rest on the floor

    Resting Position:

  • Place one hand at the top of the stick and the other hand halfway down
  • Stand upright and relaxed - Turn the Hockey stick so the tip is pointing down - while holding stick in front

    Carrying:

  • Place a ball or hockey puck in front of your stick and move it while always keeping it in contact with the stick
  • Dribbling: Place a ball or hockey puck in front of your stick and move it with short taps in a straight line
  • Stick Handling: Place a ball in front of your stick and move it with short taps from one side of the blade to the other

    Dribble Relay

  • Teams line up in shuttle relay style (half of team on opposite ends of the gym)
  • When music starts, first player begins to dribble to the opposite end.
  • The puck is passed to your teammate at that end of the gym
  • That player begins to dribble the puck back, while the first player goes to the end of the line
  • Play continues for at least two minutes, or longer when interest remains high.
