The 2000-2001 school year will be my
third year at Churchill High School. I feel fortunate
to be part of such a dynamic, supportive learning
community.
This year, I will be splitting my teaching time
between the Social Studies department (teaching
Government in the fall and Law and American
Society in the spring) and the Rachel Carson
program (teaching classes with an environmental
science focus).
As a teacher I strive to facilitate active,
interesting, personalized learning opportunities for
students. I believe that the keys to generating
attitudes of civic responsibility, collaboration and
discovery lie in helping students apply what they've
learned to real life situations that affect them
directly. I believe students should be asked to take
risks in learning, that classroom activities should
invite students to move beyond what is predictable and
comfortable for them and that a productive classroom
community must demand respectful tolerance for all
learners in it. I hope the classes I teach reflect
these core beliefs.
In addition to teaching, I am an avid outdoor
enthusiast. I have hiked most of the major Cascade
peaks in Oregon and greatly enjoy backpacking,
climbing and mountaineering. You might see me out
running in the evenings after school and you can't
imagine how much happiness playing ultimate frisbee
brings me. I also love to read, play music and
volunteer for organizations in the community that I
care greatly about.
