Graphic Design 2B

Day One

Monkey Business - Basic File Management

This is a quick exercise that demonstrates how you will be expected to manage files during the term. For every project you need to keep all files, keep them in the same location, name them appropriately, use the proper file types, and be aware of resolution.

1. Create a folder called "Graphic Design 2B" in your network space.

2. Create a folder called "monkey business" in your GD2B folder.

3. Go online and find a photo (jpeg) of a monkey (greater than 2000 px in size). Download the full sized image. Copy the jpeg into your monkey business folder.

4. Go online and find a photo (jpeg) of a briefcase. Download the full sized image. Copy the jpeg into your monkey business folder.

5. Open the monkey image using Photoshop.

6. Use the Crop tool to crop the image to 6" x 6" @200ppi.

7. Keep the monkey image open and open the briefcase image using Photoshop.

8. Use any selection tool to select the briefcase. Copy it. Switch back to the monkey image. Paste the briefcase into the monkey image (it will create a new layer).

9. Save this file as a Photoshop document (.psd) into your monkey business folder. Name the file "monkey business.psd"

10. Save the file for export by "saving as" a TIFF file. DO NOT check "layers." Name this file "monkey business.TIFF. Save this file into your monkey business folder.

11. Create a new Illustrator file. Name it "monkey business.ai." Save it into your monkey business folder.

12. Import the composite image (TIFF) into the Illustrator page by using File>Place. DO NOT simply drag it in.

13. Save.

All files should live in the same folder like one happy family. Show Mr. Eagen your Illustrator file and monkey business folder. They should look like this:

Cleaning Up - Things To Address Right Up Front
